How to Choose Story-Worthy Photos for Scrapbooking
You don’t need to scrapbook every single photo you’ve ever taken. You just need the ones that spark a story worth savoring.
This week, I’m helping you start with one photo—one spark—and turn it into a story worth telling. This doesn’t mean you create a layout with only one photo forever. It just means you’re building your story muscle without the pressure of thousands of options staring back at you.
What Makes a Photo “Story-Worthy”?
Not all photos are created equal—and not all photos deserve a spot on your layout. A story-worthy photo is one that makes you…
- Feel something (even if it’s just a smile!)
- Remember a moment you thought you forgot
- Want to say something out loud about it (seriously—those are the best ones!)
- It’s not always the prettiest photo. It’s the one with heart.
Quick Exercise: The 3-second Scroll Test
Open your camera roll and scroll slowly for 3 seconds. Stop. Now look at the photo you landed on and ask yourself:
- Does this bring up a story?
- Do I know the people, place, or feeling in this shot?
- Could I journal even 2-3 sentences about it?
If yes? Congratulations—that’s a story spark!
If no? Keep scrolling. You’ll know when you find it.
What About the Other Photos?
Great question! That one photo is just your starting point.
Once you’ve identified the spark, you can absolutely build a fuller layout around the surrounding moments:
- Use additional photos to show the sequence of the story
- Include wide shots and detail shots
- Add context with journaling blocks, captions, or timelines
This is how to go from “one memory” to a beautifully designed scrapbook page.
Bonus Tip: Look Beyond the Obvious
Sometimes the photo that deserves a layout isn’t the one you originally thought.
- The blurry laugh photo might be better than the posed smile.
- The photo of the empty chair might hold more meaning than the group shot.
- A screenshot, text message, or recipe might be the thing that sparks your story.
Be curious. And trust your gut—especially when you are organizing your photos.
Start Where You Are
