Sketch & Savor: Obsessions
Some stories feel playful enough that we hesitate to document them. They’re loud. Repetitive. Full of phases that feel like they might never end. And because of that, they’re often the easiest to skip.
This layout captures my grandson Oliver’s current obsession with dinosaurs. It’s a very specific season of life, even though it could stretch on for years. Right now, dinosaurs are everywhere. In his play. In his imagination. In the way he moves through the day. So I wanted to tell that story without the pages feeling too juvenile or visually overwhelming.

By spreading the story across two pages, I was able to give the photos room to breathe while still keeping everything grounded and intentional. The patterned paper stays playful without taking over, and the photos carry the energy of the moment without competing for attention.
I used hidden journaling on this spread so the design could stay light and uncluttered. The words are there, but they don’t interrupt the visual story. It’s a quiet way to preserve context while still letting the page feel fun.
And the photos themselves were a happy surprise.
I had asked Oliver’s mom to send a few casual pictures of him playing with his dinosaurs. Instead, she took him outside and did a full mini photoshoot. That extra effort turned everyday play into something truly memorable and gave this layout a sense of joy that feels effortless but meaningful.
This is exactly why these kinds of stories matter. Obsessions may come and go, but they leave behind clear markers of who someone was in that season.
